Symbian Vs. Android
May 28th
Presently I own a Nokia N-97 – serves fine. Pretty much a lot to me, as it is the smartest phone I ever had, relatively. This post is a Symbian vs Android comparison to help a buyer decide which one to buy (more of a Buy-Android-post).
Okay, here is a hard fact I’d like the post to open with. Symbian OS – Series 60 or S60 is outdated. The reason it feels very outdated must be the deprecated feel Nokia bears with it in the present time. Nokia isn’t very enthusiastic about releasing anything into their ‘old’ OS, proved time and again after the release of Symbian^3. New universal applications, updates and good support are hardly there for S60.
But, if I’m comparing Android with Symbian it has to be the new Symbian^3 OS. S^3 is much more efficient than any other mobile OS. It can run good even with a smaller processor and lesser RAM. I agree its good to be efficient, but that is not even a proper excuse for anything. Though S^3 – the new OS, has a much better UI and gets almost everything that other mobile platforms get, but you see it won’t be long before S^4 comes in. The same trend is projected to continue with the release of Symbian^4 as we saw when it went from S60 – S^3. I don’t see why I’d buy a Symbian^3 based phone today just to wait for some months and find out that I don’t have an access to any of those latest applications.
Even standard applications (mail/chat/blogging etc) in the OVI market for S60 OS are cheap rip offs of Android or iTunes store. They seem to have been developed by a bunch of amateurs. While Android and iPhone get such polished applications. Very small design details (which make a big difference) and UI intuitiveness goes with each and every application (mostly iOS, due to their vigorous app screening before releasing). You’d definitely want to have that after you’ve paid so much for your beloved phone.
Android gets everything. You name an app and the market has it. This is because, it is new. Developers are enthusiastic to develop great applications trying to utilize the immense potential the OS has packed in it. The trend is going to be like that or better for some time now. It won’t get old like S60 anytime soon.
You won’t miss out on what the whole world is following, if you use the today’s world standard – Android. If you want to get the full use of your smart phone and keep in touch with the latest innovations you should get an Android based phone.
Firefox or Chrome? Why
Dec 18th
I used to be a Mozilla fan. It was recently when Google started an add-on place for Chrome, I was tempted to use Chrome. Since then I’ve never used Firefox. Chrome has some fantastic features like:
Refined add-ons – The chrome extension website features some refined addons, they do their work perfectly. You need not install a dozen of plugins, most of the features are built-in in Chrome. Plugins like Google Translator, Wave notifier, Facebook notifier, Chrome bird (twitter), Gmail notifier and Stumble upon are almost enough for all purposes.
NOTE: You need Chrome beta to use plugins.
The plugins are small in size and you don’t have to face problems while downloading them on a poor connection. They are probably hosted on a good server. Chrome downloads them like normal .crx files. They get installed in a wink and you don’t even have to restart the browser.
Render Engine (WebKit) - Chrome and Apple Safari use a far superior rendering technique than the gecko (used by mozilla). It renders pages faster. This makes Chrome browse faster than Firefox. As features grow, Firefox suffers bloat, crashes, memory leaks, speed hits and generally performance degradation. Chrome doesn’t.
Start-up speed – This is one feature everyone must have noticed. Unlike Firefox (doesn’t start fast even after 100 tweaks) Chrome starts and readies itself in half a second. Don’t have to wait for ages anymore, even after installing add-ons like lambs.
Tabs stability – The new tabs opened in chrome are totally separate windows. So even if a malicious script crashes a tab the other tabs work completely fine. This make Chrome more stable with the tabs.
Slick user interface – The Chrome user interface facinates me. It is not like a normal VB type window. It has a tweaked UI, neat animation everywhere, be it tabs or the default new tab page. Plus the look is clean with no unnecessary clutter.
Misc:
Though Chrome uses less RAM you can control it and reclaim memory with the memory purge tool. [DOWNLOAD]
Bookmarks get synced with your Google account into the docs automatically, thus you can access them from anywhere.
Right Click a tab and pin it to the browser.
You can create web application shortcuts.
Chrome has integrated developer tools (javascript console, task manager etc)
Flash and some other plugins come installed with chrome.
Chrome has made a visible statistical improvement, now it is being considered a threat to the Microsoft/Mozilla dominated browser market. Microsoft is no competition for the browser kings. The only reason it gains the momentum is due to the default browser (IE) it packs in with Windows.
The new Ipod nano – 5th generation
Sep 13th
Apple released the 5th generation of the ipod nano recently. This time there is another set of added candies which were expected much before by the fans. All this in the same old 4G’s size.

It is not like Apple cannot release a totally stuffed ipod nano with everything inside it at this date. Be it wi-fi, camera or radio etc. But they prefer releasing new generations adding the features progressively with a small time gap. This is what makes their products more popular. I would obviously buy the new generation of ipod soon after every new version is released, because I’m attracted by the care Apple takes to add any new feature. The user interface includes everything you can think of. This is sufficiently enough to make you comfortable to invest for a new one. I would definitely not worry about the rs 8550 price tag, I feel Apple Ipod Nano is NOT overpriced [BUY it here for rs 8500]. Everyone would do the same I assume. This is what that boosts up their sales.
Or this whole thing can be visualized through another perspective: Steve Jobs makes sure every feature in the new ipod is thoroughly used by testers and de-bugged and strives to provide the best possible product available (yes the features they include are 99.9% bug free and very pleasing to use). Well, it is more or less both the aspects business and perfection Apple keeps in mind before new installments they release.
New features added in the 5th generation:
- Glossyfinish.
- A little bigger screen size 2.2 inch diagonally.
- Video capture (with audio): The new installment includes a VGA camera integrated in the ipod. Though VGA I’m pretty sure it would capture videos like a cheap 10mp camera. Video at 640X480 and 30FPS is really a great feature to have on a thin thing like Ipod nano. 15 Video effects are also included Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido, Motion Blur, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch, and Twirl. Check out the supeb quality videos recorded with an Ipod nano. [Videos]
- Spoken Menus: in many foreign languages.
- Integrate FM radio. This includes 15 mins of rewind and pause of live radio and iTunes tagging (??).
- Pedometer: This time the accelerometer is put to a great use. With a pedometer (counts steps) the new accelerometer app rocks.
- and probably many more small improvements they don’t usually flaunt.
You could call this an Apple fanboy’s speech but trust me Apple rocks. With other overpriced products Apple has in the market, only nano fits fine in the pocket (both economically and physically) and doesn’t seems to be overpriced at all.
I just can’t wait to try the new nano. But I’ll wait till someone gifts me
or till I can arrange some money to buy it on my own.
