Running AOE2 smoothly on Windows 7/Vista
Feb 15th
I’ve been playing quite a bit of AOE2 of late; and one recurrent problem while running the (now dated, but still going strong) game on Windows 7 (or Vista) has been an issue with map colors. The colors on the map look muddled, grainy and ugly on 7 and Vista, kind of as if they have been inverted. After a bit of research into the issue, I finally arrived at a working solution.
No, updating the graphics driver or Direct X does not work. First, what you need to do is navigate to the ‘age2_x1.exe’ or whichever exe file is associated with the game for you, right click on it, go to the ‘Compatibility’ tab and select ‘Run in compatibility mode for Windows XP (SP2), ‘Disable Visual Themes’, ‘Disable Desktop Composition’ and ‘Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings’. This might just do the trick, if you’re lucky. But if you’re not, like me (which is quite a high possibility), read on.
For some people, minimizing the game just after it starts up and then maximizing it again sets the colors straight. But it didn’t for me; what worked for me instead was to open up Process Explorer with Ctrl+Alt+Del after starting the game up, ending the process ‘explorer.exe’ and switching back to the game with Alt+Tab. This did the trick, and should work for most people.
This solution can also be automated without the need for having to go through the process of terminating explorer.exe before starting the game and rerunning it each time the game ends; this can be done by creating a batch file with the instructions fed to it. To do so, create a new notepad file with the following content:
taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
EMPIRES2.EXE
Start explorer.exe
{if you have the regular AOE2, or)
taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
age2_x1.exe
Start explorer.exe
{for AOE2 Expansion}
Then save it as a batch file, say ‘AOE_fixed.bat’ and then copy it to the folder where the EMPIRES2.exe or age2_x1.exe file exists. Then you may create a shortcut for the batch file on the desktop or elsewhere and then double click on it to launch the game whenever you want. Cheers

Find out how long your computer has been ON – Windows
Jan 11th
Windows XP:
1. Press ctrl+r to bring the run dialogue box.
2. Now type in cmd to open command prompt.
3. Without worrying about where the cursor is, just type in systeminfo.
4. Scroll the generated information to find a row containing the system uptime.
Windows vista and 7
For windows vista and seven you can simply check the uptime in the task manager.
1. Press ctrl+shift+esc to open up the task manager directly in vista and seven. (no intermediate screen). If your task manager has been disabled due to a bug attack you can use this to enable it once again.
2. Now go to the performance tab.
3. You can find the system uptime below the real time graphs.
In vista and Windows 7 the XP method works but it won’t tell you the uptime directly. That method tells you when you last switched ON your computer (the date and time). The math is left for you to be done.
Enable Aero on Windows 7 home basic version
Jan 7th
Windows 7 looks dull without aero effects enabled. Windows 7 home basic version has no aero effects enabled from factory. AeroEnabler is a nice small tool that enables aero effects on your home basic version. Aero effects demand some minimum display driver specifications for smooth operation. AeroEnabler can enable those effects even if the requirements are not met. It is not suggested that you enable the aero effects if you do not meet the minimum requirements.
Minimum requirements:
DirectX 9.0 acceleration
Pixel shader version 2.0 with 32 bit pixel per pixel support
128 mb graphics memory

Windows 7 Easter egg – GodMode control panel
Jan 6th
I got very excited about the new hidden mode recently discovered in windows 7. This gives you a new GodMode control panel at the place you choose to create it. You have access to all those control panel functions and several other OS controls at one place. The GodMode has been tested to work fine with 32-bit versions, but 64-bit versions have reported some issues. Well, you can try it on 64-bit OS and report here.
To Make the GodMode control panel:
Make a new folder
Rename the new folder to: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Done, now you have the folder’s icon changed to a control panel look with the name GodMode. This control panel isn’t just the old one. It has many other OS controls, everything at one place.

Exactly like the UNetBootin software for linux, there is an opensource tool for windows7 available for download. Its called Window 7 Download tool. It functions the same way as the UNetBootin, to create bootable USB or a DVD from a windows 7 ISO file.
The windows 7 USB download tool creates a bootable USB or a DVD from the ISO file of Windows 7. The bootable USB/DVD can be used to boot the computer at startup. Changing the boot order from BIOS may help with boot issues. Then a simple guided installation can be done to install windows 7.
The following applications must be installed prior to installing the tool:
•Microsoft .NET Framework v2 must be installed. It can be downloaded athttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en .
